About the piece
The second of the six Esterhazy sonatas of 1774, in the relatively bright and unusual key of E major.
Its central Andante turns to E minor, and the shift of mode within the same tonic is a device Haydn returned to constantly, allowing him to darken the music without disturbing the key scheme of the work as a whole.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
