About the piece
One of the six Auenbrugger sonatas of 1780, and remarkable for its key: C♯ minor was almost unheard of in keyboard music of the period, awkward under the hand and rare enough that Haydn's choice is itself a statement.
The result is a brooding, harmonically restless work, and the unusual key gives the whole sonata a slightly veiled quality that sets it apart from its companions in the set.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
