About the piece
The last of the six Auenbrugger sonatas of 1780. Like several of Haydn's works from this period it opens unconventionally, beginning with a set of variations rather than a movement in sonata form.
Haydn's willingness to reorder the expected sequence of movements, and to build entire structures from variation rather than argument, is one of the qualities that makes his sonatas less predictable than their reputation suggests.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
