About the piece
Composed around the early 1780s, this is among the most frequently performed of Haydn's minor-key sonatas. Its first movement is restless and driven, built from a nervous, constantly circling figure that never quite settles.
A serene slow movement in G major provides contrast before a finale that returns to E minor and to the anxious energy of the opening, ending the work without the reassuring resolution convention expected.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
