About the piece
One of the three sonatas published in 1784 with a dedication to Princess Marie Esterhazy. Like its companions it dispenses with a slow movement altogether, running to just two.
The compression is deliberate rather than casual. By this stage Haydn was confident enough to abandon the three-movement convention whenever the material did not require it, and the sonata loses nothing for its brevity.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
