About the piece
The last of the three sonatas dedicated to Princess Marie Esterhazy in 1784. It opens not with a fast movement but with an elaborately decorated Andante con espressione, its melody heavily ornamented in the manner of a slow aria.
The brief closing Vivace assai is full of the sudden stops and comic hesitations that characterize Haydn's late humor, and the two movements together last barely ten minutes.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
