About the piece
Composed around 1777, during the same journey that took Mozart through Mannheim and Paris, this sonata has an unusually brilliant, almost orchestral character, especially in its opening movement, which trades ideas between registers the way a concerto trades them between soloist and orchestra.
It is one of the more extroverted of his early sonatas, closing with a genial rondo finale.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
