About the piece
The eighteenth prelude abandons melody almost entirely in favor of declamation. Bare unaccompanied phrases are flung out and answered by crashing chords, in the manner of an opera singer's recitative before an aria that never arrives.
It ends with a series of violent hammered chords, one of the angriest gestures in the whole cycle.

Frédéric Chopin

Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the early Romantic period who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading composer of his era whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation".
