About the piece
The twenty third prelude is the lightest thing in the cycle, a weightless ripple of figuration in the right hand over a quietly flowing left.
Its final bar contains one of Chopin's subtlest strokes: a low E♭ that quietly contradicts the F major it has just settled into, leaving the piece unresolved and opening the door to the storm of the final prelude.
