About the piece
The prelude that opens Chopin's cycle of twenty four, in C major, deliberately echoing the C major prelude that opens Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Where Bach's is serene and evenly flowing, Chopin's is breathless and syncopated, the melody caught between the hands.
It lasts barely a minute, setting the pattern for a set in which several pieces are over almost before they have begun.

Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the early Romantic period who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading composer of his era whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation".
