About the piece
Nine valses-caprices composed around 1852, in which Liszt takes the modest waltzes and Landler Schubert wrote for domestic evenings and reimagines them as concert pieces, elaborating and stitching them together.
The sixth, in A minor, is much the most popular and was long a recital favorite. The set is a characteristic act of homage from Liszt, who did more than anyone to keep Schubert's piano music in circulation in the decades after his death.
