About the piece
Solveig's Song is the closing number of Grieg's second Peer Gynt suite, drawn from his 1875 incidental music for Ibsen's play. In the drama, Solveig sings it while waiting, across decades, for Peer Gynt to return home.
Its melody, folk-like in its simplicity, moves between a minor-key verse and a wordless, humming major-key refrain, and the song has long been performed on its own, independent of the suite or the play.

Edvard Grieg
1843–1907
Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.
