About the piece
The first movement of the two-movement sonata Op. 78, composed in 1809 and dedicated to Countess Therese von Brunsvik, from a family close to Beethoven for many years.
He is reported to have preferred this sonata to the far more famous Moonlight and to have been irritated by the latter's popularity. Its key of F♯ major is rare in the repertoire, and the four-bar Adagio cantabile that opens it functions as a brief, warm doorway into the Allegro.
