About the piece
The first of the six variations that make up the opening movement of Mozart's A major sonata, K. 331. It keeps the theme's harmonic skeleton intact while breaking the melody into flowing ornamental figuration in the right hand.
Mozart's variation technique here is conversational rather than dramatic: each variation examines the tune from a different angle without ever losing sight of it.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a Classical composer and musician. He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
