About the piece
The third variation, and the only one of the six to turn to the minor. The shift from A major to A minor darkens the theme without changing its outline, and the effect within an otherwise sunny movement is striking.
Placing a single minor-mode variation partway through a set was a familiar eighteenth century strategy for introducing shadow, and Mozart uses it here with characteristic economy.
