About the piece
The fourth variation of Mozart's K. 331 first movement, returning to A major after the minor-mode third. It opens out the keyboard's range, with the hands reaching into widely separated registers.
The writing here is more overtly pianistic than in the earlier variations, exploiting the instrument's spread rather than concentrating the texture in the middle of the keyboard.
