About the piece
The sixth and final variation of the opening movement of K. 331. Mozart changes the meter from the theme's lilting compound time to a brisk four, transforming the character completely and bringing the movement to a brilliant close.
Ending a variation set by altering the meter and accelerating is a standard eighteenth century way of signalling a finale, and Mozart applies it here with complete assurance.
