About the piece
Composed between 1834 and 1837, this is a set of variations rather than studies in the ordinary sense, on a theme written by Baron von Fricken, an amateur flautist and the adoptive father of Ernestine, to whom Schumann was briefly engaged.
The title reflects Schumann's ambition to draw orchestral weight and color from a single piano. Its finale quotes a melody from Marschner's opera Der Templer und die Judin as a tribute to the English composer William Sterndale Bennett, Schumann's friend and the work's dedicatee.
