About the piece
Composed in 1886, this was the march that made Sousa's name. He later recalled that it was the first of his works to sell in enormous quantities, eventually passing a million copies of sheet music, and that its success settled his path as a composer.
It dates from his years directing the United States Marine Band, the post he held from 1880 to 1892 before forming the civilian touring band that made him internationally famous.

John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for US military marches. He is known as "The March King". Among Sousa's best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever", "Semper Fidelis", "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", and "The Washington Post".
