About the piece
Composed in 1901 and dedicated to the Pan-American Exposition held that year in Buffalo, New York, the fair at which President McKinley was assassinated a few months after it opened.
Sousa reportedly thought this march might come to rival The Stars and Stripes Forever in popularity. It did not, though it remains well regarded, and its lilting compound meter sets it apart from the four-square feel of most of his marches.

John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for US military marches. He is known as "The March King". Among Sousa's best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever", "Semper Fidelis", "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", and "The Washington Post".
