About the piece
Piano transcriptions of Robert Schumann's songs, part of the work Clara devoted to her husband's music for the four decades she outlived him.
After his death in 1856 she edited the complete edition of his works, programmed them relentlessly on tour, and shaped his posthumous reputation almost single-handedly, while largely setting her own composing aside. She continued performing into her seventies and taught at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.
The composer
Clara Schumann
1819–1896
Clara Josephine Schumann was a German virtuoso pianist, composer, and piano teacher. Regarded as one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era, she exerted her influence over the course of a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital by lessening the importance of purely virtuosic works. She also composed solo piano pieces, a piano concerto, chamber music, choral pieces, and songs.
