About the piece
Three sonatas by Joseph Woelfl, who in 1799 met Beethoven in a celebrated improvisation contest at a Vienna salon, the two men taking turns at the keyboard before an audience of connoisseurs.
Accounts suggest the contest was amicable and roughly even: Woelfl was admired for clarity and an astonishing hand span, said to reach a thirteenth, while Beethoven overwhelmed listeners with fire and invention. The two remained on good terms, and Woelfl dedicated a set of sonatas to him.
