About the piece
Three bravura scherzi from Alkan's earlier career, when he was active in the Paris salons alongside Chopin, Liszt and Thalberg and regarded as their equal at the keyboard.
He withdrew from that world in the late 1840s and spent much of the rest of his life in near-total seclusion, continuing to compose but rarely appearing in public, which is the principal reason a composer of his stature vanished so completely from view.

Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life.
