About the piece
Seven pieces alternating capriccios, which are agitated and driven, with intermezzi, which are quiet and reflective, composed in 1892 as the first of the four late sets.
Brahms had effectively announced his retirement from composing the previous year, then encountered the clarinettist Richard Muhlfeld and found himself writing again. The four collections of piano pieces that followed are the product of that late resurgence.

Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. His music features expressive counterpoint, freer dissonance, rhythmic vitality, and traditional forms. His works include four symphonies, four concertos, a Requiem, much chamber music, and hundreds of folk-song arrangements and Lieder.
