About the piece
Eight pieces published in 1879, marking Brahms's return to solo piano writing after nearly two decades spent largely on chamber, orchestral and choral music.
The set established the pattern he would follow to the end: short pieces titled simply capriccio or intermezzo, alternating agitation with introspection, and abandoning the large sonata forms of his youth entirely.

Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. His music features expressive counterpoint, freer dissonance, rhythmic vitality, and traditional forms. His works include four symphonies, four concertos, a Requiem, much chamber music, and hundreds of folk-song arrangements and Lieder.
