About the piece
Nine variations on an aria from Salieri's opera Falstaff, premiered in Vienna in 1799 while Woelfl was working in the city.
Writing variations on a currently successful opera tune was standard practice, allowing a composer to capitalize on a work while it was still on everyone's lips, and virtually every keyboard composer of the era did it.
