Busoni's attempt to complete the unfinished final fugue of Bach's Art of Fugue, which breaks off mid-phrase at the point where Bach introduces his own name as a subject. The result, composed in 1910, is far more than a completion: a monumental half-hour structure of chorale prelude, fugues, intermezzo, variations and cadenza that is among the most formidable works in the piano literature. Busoni revised it repeatedly and produced versions for two pianos and for orchestra.
