About the piece
Litolff wrote five Concertos Symphoniques, hybrid works treating the piano as part of a symphonic argument rather than as a soloist set against the orchestra, and the form directly influenced Liszt, who dedicated his first concerto to him.
One movement has outlived everything else he wrote: the scherzo from the fourth concerto, a piece of dazzling lightness that is still regularly performed and recorded while the concertos themselves are almost never heard complete.

Henry Charles Litolff
1818–1891
Henry Charles Litolff was a French and British virtuoso pianist, composer of Romantic music, and music publisher born in London. A prolific composer, he is today known mainly for a single brief work – the scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No. 4 in D minor – and remembered as the founder of the Collection Litolff, a highly regarded publishing imprint of classical music scores.
