About the piece
If I Were a Bird, the eleventh of Henselt's Op. 2 studies and by far his best known piece, a fluttering perpetual-motion study whose title comes from the poetic epigraph he attached to it.
It became one of the most popular showpieces of the nineteenth century, played by virtuosos and aspiring amateurs alike, and it remains the one Henselt work most listeners are likely to have heard.

Adolf von Henselt
1814–1889
Adolf von Henselt was a German composer and virtuoso pianist. He was a well known composer during his lifetime best known for his Douze Études caractéristiques, which were known for their difficulty. He studied under Johann Nepomuk Hummel and had many notable students of his own. He was also well known for his Piano Concerto in F minor, Op. 16.
