Sheet Music Scanning Apps Compared: Turning Paper Into a Practice-Ready Score
Sheet music scanner apps solve two different jobs. Compare PlayScore 2, ScanScore, Audiveris, and the cleanest route from paper into practice.

Most musicians searching for a sheet music scanner app do not need optical music recognition. They need a straight, readable PDF that opens quickly on a tablet and stays attached to their practice. Recognition becomes useful only when the notes themselves must play back, transpose, or move into notation software.

Start with the output, not the scanner
A photograph, a PDF, a MIDI file, and a MusicXML file may all begin with the same paper page, but they are not interchangeable results. A document scanner preserves the appearance of the page. It fixes perspective, increases contrast, combines pages, and saves a PDF. The notation inside is still an image, much like a photograph of text rather than a word-processing document.
Optical music recognition, usually shortened to OMR, tries to interpret the page as music. It identifies staves, clefs, voices, note durations, accidentals, repeats, text, and other symbols, then rebuilds them as data. That data can be played, transposed, or exported. MusicXML is the open interchange format to look for when the next stop is MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius, or another notation editor. MIDI carries useful pitch and timing data, but it does not preserve the full meaning or engraving of a score nearly as well.
For a player who simply wants a paper part on an iPad, OMR often adds work without adding value. Recognition can introduce a wrong accidental, a missing rest, or a broken repeat into a page that was already correct. A clean PDF keeps the original engraving intact. That is why the best route for most practice use is a phone document scanner followed by a purpose-built score workspace, not an OMR subscription.

There are good reasons to recognize notation. A singer may want to hear one choir line. An arranger may need to transpose a part. A teacher may want to extract two measures into an exercise. In those cases, OMR can save a great deal of re-entry, provided the result is treated as a draft rather than a finished score.
The sheet music scanner apps worth using
There is no honest universal accuracy percentage for a sheet music scanner app. A clean modern piano score and a faded orchestral part with pencil marks are different recognition problems. The useful comparison is therefore about workflow: where the scan happens, which formats come out, how correction works, and what the tool costs before the first full book is processed.

Best mobile OMR: PlayScore 2
PlayScore 2 is the strongest mobile choice when the main job is to point a phone at printed music and hear the result. The free level can play a page captured by the camera. Its Productivity subscription adds multi-page, multi-staff camera and image documents plus MIDI export; the Professional tier adds PDF input and full-notation MusicXML export. On the US App Store, those tiers currently run $5.99 or $6.99 monthly, with annual options at $34.99 and $59.99 respectively.
Its practice tools are genuinely useful: tap a measure to start, drag over music to make a loop, change tempo, count in with a metronome, transpose, and adjust or mute individual staves. The catch is input quality. Its Android listing explicitly warns that budget-phone cameras may not be good enough, while PlayScore's own feature page advises against passing images through document-scanning filters before recognition. For PlayScore, use the original high-quality photo or PDF and let the app handle the page.

Best desktop correction workflow: ScanScore 3
ScanScore 3 makes more sense when a corrected MusicXML file is the goal and a desktop is available. It imports from PDF, image, or scanner, places the source beside the recognized version, plays the result, and lets the user repair notes before export. That side-by-side editing matters more than a flashy camera capture once a score has ten or fifty pages.
The product tiers are based on staves per system. Melody handles one staff for $9 a year, so it is not the piano bargain it first appears to be. Ensemble allows up to four staves for $39 a year, enough for most piano music, string quartets, and simple choir layouts. Professional removes the staff limit for $79 a year. The license lasts 365 days without automatic renewal. The current desktop release supports Windows 8 or later and macOS 10.12 or later; ScanScore says its Capture mobile app is being reworked, so this should be bought as a desktop tool.
Best simple mobile alternative: Sheet Music Scanner
Sheet Music Scanner is easier to understand than its current pricing. Point the camera at a page or import an image or PDF, tap a measure to play, choose a tempo and instrument, then export audio, PDF, MIDI, or MusicXML. It supports multiple pages, simultaneous voices, separate-staff playback, treble, bass, and alto clefs. The iOS app is currently a free download with several in-app purchase options; the US-dollar Android listing shows a paid download, so the store page is the only reliable price for a particular device.
Its official limitations are unusually candid. Handwriting, tablature, shape notes, codas, percussion notation, dynamics, double sharps, double flats, and grace notes are not currently supported. Old prints and unusual fonts may also fail. That makes it a sensible tool for a clean vocal line, hymn, or straightforward instrumental part, but a poor first choice for a dense contemporary score. The developer recommends 300 DPI or an 8 to 12 megapixel image per page.
Best free option: Audiveris
Audiveris is free, open-source OMR with an interactive editor and MusicXML export. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it is the best fit for someone willing to learn a technical desktop interface or build a repeatable archive workflow. It does not support handwritten scores and is designed around common printed Western notation.
The handbook says directly that recognition is still far from perfect, which is why so much of the application is built around verification and manual correction. That honesty is useful. Audiveris can remove the cost of a subscription, but it cannot remove the cost of checking the result. Choose it when budget matters more than convenience, or when an open format and open-source workflow are requirements.
Why even good OMR still needs proofreading
Text OCR can often guess a word from its neighbors. Music recognition has to recover several systems at once: vertical pitch, horizontal time, voice assignment, staff grouping, symbol relationships, and page structure. A dot beside a note might alter duration; a similar dot elsewhere might be articulation. A slur crossing a system break and a tie joining equal pitches look related on paper but mean different things in the data.
Real pages add shadows, curved paper, faded ink, pencil marks, old typefaces, and staves that are not perfectly horizontal. A real-world OMR study published by TISMIR treated ageing, lighting, and dirt artifacts as core recognition problems, not edge cases. In one production pipeline described by the researchers, improved recognition and confidence scoring cut average human correction from about 11 minutes to 3.5 minutes per page. That is a meaningful saving, but it also shows the right mental model: the person remains in the loop.
Check in that order. If the software has merged two systems, omitted a measure, or assigned the wrong clef, correcting individual notes first wastes time. Next verify the rhythmic skeleton, especially rests and independent voices. Only then repair pitches and accidentals. Repeats, first and second endings, ties, lyrics, articulations, and dynamics come last because their errors are easier to miss during playback.

Run the hardest representative page before scanning the whole book. Pick a page with the densest chords, several voices, tuplets, repeats, or a system change. If that one needs extensive rebuilding, a faithful PDF is probably the better result. If it needs a few predictable corrections, the time saved across the remaining pages may justify recognition.
Build a scan the software can actually read
A good capture begins before the shutter. Flatten the page without covering the staff, place the camera directly above it, and use broad, even light from both sides. Avoid a bright window on one edge and a hand shadow on the other. Keep every staff line inside the crop and remove loose pencil notes if the paper can be cleaned safely. One sharp page is better than a clever two-page shot with a curved gutter.
For a practice PDF, the built-in tools are enough. On iPhone and iPad, Apple Files can scan documents, find the page edges, let the user adjust the corners, and save directly to a chosen location. The Google Drive mobile app can capture multiple pages, crop and rotate them, apply grayscale or cleanup filters, and save a PDF or JPG. These tools are excellent for preserving the page because their processing is designed to make a document easier to read.
For OMR, follow the recognizer's instructions rather than applying every available filter. PlayScore asks for a direct, high-quality image and warns that document-scanning processing may reduce recognition quality. Sheet Music Scanner asks for a 300 DPI file or roughly 8 to 12 megapixels per page. A flatbed scan is still excellent for old books and large batches, but turn off aggressive compression and test grayscale against color before committing to hundreds of pages.
Name files before importing them: composer, work, part, and movement is enough. Put pages in order and remove duplicates while the paper is still beside the device. This small bit of housekeeping prevents the digital score from becoming a mystery PDF called Scan 0047 six months later. Rights reminder: digitize public-domain music, your own work, or material you have permission to copy. Owning a paper copy does not automatically grant unrestricted reproduction or sharing rights, and local rules differ.
Move the result into the right practice workflow
The scan is not finished when a file appears. It is finished when the file supports the next musical job. A PDF belongs in a reader or practice workspace. MusicXML belongs in a notation editor for cleanup, transposition, layout, and part extraction. Audio or MIDI can help with checking, but neither should be treated as the authoritative score.
For the first route, import the finished PDF into Practis. Practis is our product, and it is not an OMR scanner. The short answer for each kind of musician
The best scanner is the one that produces the file the musician will actually use. Buying the most capable recognizer for every paper score is like retypesetting a book just to read it on a tablet. The extra flexibility is valuable only when something needs to change.
Start with one difficult page. If a readable PDF solves the real problem, stop there and practise. If the notes need to become data, recognize them, proofread them in the right order, and do not trust the file until it agrees with the paper.
