Why You Keep Plateauing on the Same Passage
If one passage keeps stalling no matter how often you repeat it, the problem is usually specific. This guide shows how to diagnose fingering, rhythm, chunking, tempo, and attention plateaus.

If the same passage keeps stalling, the problem is usually not that you need more grit. It is usually that one part of the passage is still unstable while the rest is masking it. Because the surrounding material feels familiar, the whole thing can seem like a mysterious wall instead of what it usually is: a specific weakness repeating under slightly different disguises.
A plateau is frustrating precisely because it feels global. The useful move is to make it local again. Is the fingering actually settled? Is the subdivision still alive? Is the weak point really the notes, or the junction between chunks? Are you increasing tempo too fast? Or have the repetitions become so fluent and mindless that they are no longer changing anything?

A plateau is usually a diagnosis problem before it is a discipline problem
One reason plateaus feel so demoralizing is that the work often looks serious from the outside. You are showing up. You are repeating. You are not avoiding the passage. That feels like commitment, so when improvement stalls it is easy to blame talent, age, or some missing inner gear. In practice, the more common issue is that the repetitions stopped being diagnostic a while ago.
Aaron Williamon and Eric Valentine showed the broader version of this in Quantity and Quality of Musical Practice as Predictors of Performance Quality. Better performance was not explained by amount of practice alone. The quality of the work mattered. That is useful here because a plateau often means your amount stayed high while the information content of the reps dropped.
The same diagnostic lens appears in Guadalupe López-Íñiguez and Gary McPherson’s music microanalysis study. The useful idea is not abstract “self-regulation.” It is the practical loop of planning, monitoring, evaluating, and changing the next attempt. If a passage is not moving, the next question should be what variable is still unstable, not how to become a harder worker at the exact same ineffective task.
If the passage is stuck, assume one small thing is still wrong before assuming the whole passage is impossible.
If fingering or movement is still changing, the passage is not really learned yet
Many plateaus turn out to be disguised setup problems. The notes may be readable and the general shape may be familiar, but the hand, bow, breath, or articulation still arrives differently from one attempt to the next. That creates a fake plateau because every repetition is nominally the same passage while the motor solution underneath it is still moving around.
This is especially common when a musician has a “preferred” fingering in theory but quietly switches to another one under load. The passage then feels cursed because the same failure keeps returning, but the real problem is that the body has not committed to one route. In that situation, more repetition just strengthens the confusion. The practical fix is smaller: decide the setup, rehearse the approach into it, and make sure the same motion survives before and after the target note.

If that is your plateau, the reset looks a lot like the one in fixing a deeply practiced mistake: isolate the trigger, keep the loop tiny, and make sure the same physical solution launches every time before you widen the phrase again.
If the rhythm is unstable, the passage is not plateauing. It is drifting.
Another common plateau is rhythmic rather than mechanical. The notes are basically there, but the subdivision softens, the beat gets fuzzy, or the timing relationship between the hands or between fingers collapses at the same point every time. Musicians often label this “coordination” because that sounds more respectable than “rhythm,” but the fix is usually rhythmic clarity.
NAfME’s Plan–Practice–Reflect guidance is useful here because it emphasizes small chunks, moderate tempo, and explicit checking of rhythm accuracy before calling a repetition productive. That advice sounds basic, but it matters because a lot of stalled passages are being repeated in a tempo zone where the player is no longer truly hearing the grid. The result is a fluent but unstable version of the passage.
This is also where tempo jumps create fake plateaus. If the passage only “plateaus” when you jump from one comfortable tempo to a much faster one, the issue is probably not a mysterious ceiling. It is that the pulse and movement were never taught to survive the middle stages. That is why slow practice stops working once it no longer bridges back to the real task.

If the chunk junction is weak, the same point will keep failing
Sometimes the passage itself is not the real problem. The unstable point is the join between two chunks. You can play each side on its own, but the handoff never settles. That kind of plateau is especially frustrating because isolated practice seems to “work,” yet the same bar keeps collapsing when you run the phrase.
There is now unusually direct evidence for this. In Bridging Chunks during Complex Movement Sequence Execution, Pei-Cheng Shih, Masato Hirano, and Shinichi Furuya found that chunk junctions in memorized piano sequences were particularly vulnerable under perturbation, and that training focused specifically on those junctions improved stability. That is highly relevant for practice plateaus. A passage can seem “stuck” because the transition between learned subunits is still cognitively expensive.
That fits with what musicians often feel in the room. They know both sides. They do not know the bridge. If the plateau lives at a chunk boundary, the fix is not another full run. It is targeted work on the pickup, the landing, and the overlap. That is also why difficult passages often fall apart at full speed at precisely those joins first.
If repetition has gone stale, change the task before doing more of it
The last kind of plateau is attentional. The passage is familiar enough that the reps feel smooth, but not precise enough to keep changing. This is where musicians end up doing serious-looking work that no longer teaches anything. The fingers go through the same route, the attention drops, and the passage stays where it was yesterday.
Christine Carter and Jessica Grahn’s interleaved-practice study is helpful because it shows why blocked repetition can feel fluent without producing the best retention. Participants also reported better focus and mistake identification under interleaving. Name the exact failure
Wrong note, tempo collapse, chunk join, fingering swap, or attention loss. Do not settle for “the passage is hard.”
Shrink to the unstable point
Keep the target small enough that the cause is visible instead of hidden inside easier notes.
Change one variable
Fingering, subdivision, chunk overlap, rhythm pattern, metronome placement, or entry point. One change is enough.
Retest from fresh
Come back from a different starting point or after a break so you learn whether the change actually transferred.
