The good week most musicians picture is a tidy block of seven: an hour at the instrument every day, same time, same length, never missed. It's the week the disciplined people are supposedly having, and measuring yourself against it is a reliable way to feel like you're failing. So we did something more useful than imagine it. We looked at what good weeks actually look like in real practice logs — and the real shape is shorter, lumpier, and a great deal kinder than the fantasy.
What follows is built from two things: the genuinely logged data of Practis users, and the research on why practice sticks. The numbers aren't a commandment — they're a mirror, and the reflection is reassuring. A good week isn't a wall of identical sessions. It's a handful of ordinary days, a scattering of short sessions, the hard part done early, and at least one day where you don't touch the instrument at all.
What the data actually shows
We looked at just under a thousand genuinely time-stamped practice sessions from a few dozen Practis users, logged over about a year. When we isolate the weeks where someone was clearly putting the work in — three or more days of practice in the week — a consistent shape appears, and it is nothing like seven-times-an-hour.

Three details inside those numbers matter more than the headlines. First, on the days people did practise, they typically logged two sessions, not one — a short block in the morning and another later, rather than a single sit-down. Second, the work was spread fairly evenly across the week, not crammed into the weekend; Mondays and Thursdays were as busy as Saturdays. And third, almost nobody — about two in a hundred weeks — practised all seven days. The committed week tops out around five days, leaves two for life and rest, and is built out of many small pieces rather than a few heroic ones.
Two honest caveats before anyone treats this as law. It's a small, self-selected sample — a few dozen people who use a tracking app, who almost by definition skew conscientious — and we set aside a batch of older bulk-imported logs that carried no real timestamps. So read it as a window, not a census. But the window is consistent with everything the research predicts, which is the part worth trusting.

Why the lumpy week beats the tidy one
The uneven shape isn't a failure to reach the ideal — in several ways it is the ideal, and the research explains why. Spreading practice across more days, in shorter sessions, is distributed practice, and for motor learning it tends to beat the same total time crammed into fewer long sittings; the spacing is part of what makes the skill stick. So the player doing four forty-minute days is not a watered-down version of the player doing two marathon sessions. On retention, they're often the stronger one, for less total pain.
The rest days do real work too, and this is the part most people feel guilty about for no reason. Matthew Walker and Robert Stickgold's research on sleep and motor learning found that a single night's sleep produced roughly a 20% gain in motor speed with no loss of accuracy — an improvement that simply did not appear across an equivalent stretch of waking time. You get measurably better at a physical skill while you sleep, not just while you drill. A day away from the instrument isn't lost time; it's when a chunk of the learning is quietly installed.
And there's a detail in that research that should reshape how you order your week. The overnight gains weren't spread evenly — they landed hardest on the passages that had been most difficult before sleep, while the easy parts barely improved. The hard transitions got an 18% overnight bump; the easy ones, essentially nothing. Which means the most valuable thing you can do is feed the hard passage to your sleep early and often: struggle with it today, let the night work on it, come back to find it slightly easier, repeat.

A good week, drawn out
Here's one concrete shape that fits both the data and the science: roughly five hours, spread over five days, with the hard passage front-loaded so it gets the most nights of sleep working on it, lighter maintenance later, one longer integrative session, and two genuine days off. Yours will differ — the point isn't the exact minutes, it's the rhythm: uneven, front-loaded, and rested.

The within-day picture matters as much as the across-week one. Remember that the data showed two sessions on a typical practice day, not one — so even a fifty-five-minute Monday is more likely a thirty-minute block and a twenty-five-minute one than a single unbroken stretch. How to use this on your own week
Don't copy the model minute for minute; copy its rules, then scale them to the time you actually have. Pick the week's single hardest passage and put it on your earliest available days, so it banks the most nights of sleep. Aim to touch the instrument on more days for less time rather than fewer days for more. Let yourself log two short sessions on a busy day instead of forcing one long one. Schedule at least one full rest day without guilt, and protect it — it's working even when you're not. And keep one lighter, low-pressure day in the mix so the week has somewhere to breathe.

How many days a week should I actually practise?
More days for less time beats fewer days for more, so four or five days is a strong, sustainable target — which is exactly where the committed weeks in our data landed. Seven isn't the goal and almost nobody hits it; the players making real progress leave room for rest. If you can only manage three focused days, that's a real practice week, not a failed one.
Are rest days really okay, or am I just being lazy?
They're not just okay — they're part of the learning. Sleep is when a large share of motor improvement actually gets consolidated, especially on the passages you found hardest. A day off isn't a gap in your progress; it's often where the progress happens. The 98% of weeks in our data with at least one rest day aren't the slackers — that's just what sustainable looks like.
What if I can't manage five hours a week?
Then scale the shape down, don't abandon it. Two or three short sessions across the week, hard passage first, one rest day, still follows every rule that matters — it just holds less total volume. The structure is what drives improvement; the hours only set the ceiling. A well-shaped two-hour week beats a shapeless five-hour one.
The fantasy week — seven flawless hours — mostly functions as a stick to beat yourself with, and it doesn't even describe what good players do. The real good week is humbler and more achievable: a few honest days, lots of short sessions, the hard thing met early and handed to your sleep, and rest treated as part of the work rather than the absence of it.
