How to Practice Trills Without Cheating Yourself

Most students practise trills by playing them fast, for as long as possible, until the hand cramps. That is not building a trill — it is rehearsing a flutter. A real trill has evenness, endurance, and shape, and each of those is trained separately.

How to Practice Trills Without Cheating Yourself

Most adult learners practise their trills the same way. They play the two notes as fast as possible, for as long as possible, until the hand cramps. They repeat this approach the next day, then the next. After a month, the trill in their current piece sounds approximately the same as it did before — uneven, breathless, sometimes lurching, sometimes stopping early — and the pianist concludes that trills are simply hard. The conclusion is correct. The method was wrong.

A real trill has three distinct qualities: evenness (each note the same duration and dynamic as its neighbour), endurance (the trill sustains for the length the music requires without deteriorating), and musical shape (the trill begins, develops, and terminates in a way that supports the phrase rather than just decorating it). Each is trained separately. The "fast and long" practice produces none of them. This article is about the five shortcuts students take that ruin trill development, and the specific work that actually builds the skill.

The historical weight of the trill

It is worth pausing for context. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, in his 1753 treatise Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen, gave the trill more space than any other ornament. He was emphatic — students who learned trills badly, he argued, would never become real keyboard players. The trill was not decoration; it was a structural element of phrasing and expression, and any keyboard pedagogy that treated it as a peripheral skill was incomplete.

That seriousness is missing from most modern adult-learner pedagogy. Trills get treated as a "you'll figure it out" detail, and the methods most students stumble onto are exactly the ones that prevent real development. The five sections below name those shortcuts and replace each with the work that actually builds the skill.

Cheat 1 — Going fast immediately

The first and most common shortcut is to skip evenness work entirely and head straight for speed. The student plays the trill at the target tempo of the piece, finds it uneven and unsustainable, and concludes they need to "build speed." More attempts. Faster repetitions. The unevenness becomes a permanent feature.

The replacement is slow rhythmic-grouping practice. Set a metronome at 60 BPM. Play the trill as triplets — three notes per beat — and listen to whether each of the three is the same length and the same volume as the others. They almost certainly are not. The middle note is usually lighter or shorter than the outer two. Spend a minute fixing that. Move to four notes per beat (sixteenths). Listen again. Move to six (sextuplets). The discipline is to never play the trill faster than you can play it evenly, and the metronome enforces this honestly.

Once each grouping is reliably even at 60 BPM, raise the tempo by ten and repeat. Cheat 2 — Practising the trill without its lead-in and exit

The second shortcut is to isolate the trill itself — just the two notes, looping — and ignore everything around it. In real repertoire, no trill exists in isolation. It is preceded by some kind of approach (a leap, a scale passage, a chord) and followed by a termination (a turn, a single resolution note, a held final note). The transitions in and out are where most trill failures actually happen. Isolated practice on the two notes does not train them at all.

The replacement is to practise the trill with one bar of music on each side. The approach to the trill, the trill itself, and the bar after the trill. Ten repetitions of this larger unit teaches your hand how to arrive at the trill cleanly, sustain it, and exit it without losing pulse. A trill that is even in isolation but disrupts the surrounding music is still a broken trill from the listener's perspective. Cheat 3 — Always using the same fingering

The third shortcut is to use the default fingering — usually 1-3 or 2-3 — regardless of musical context. Different trills want different fingerings. A trill that ends with a turn back to the main note often benefits from 1-3 because the thumb is positioned for the turn. A trill on a black key against a white key may need 2-3 or 3-4 for keyboard geometry. A long sustained trill might use 1-3-2-3-1-3-2-3 (alternating finger pairs to distribute the load). A trill at the top of a chord might need 4-5 with the lower fingers holding inner voices.

Most editions mark fingerings, but as always, the edition's choices are starting points, not commands. For trills specifically, test two or three fingerings on the same passage before committing — the difference in evenness and endurance between a well-chosen and a poorly-chosen trill fingering is often dramatic.

Cheat 4 — Treating short and long trills as the same skill

The fourth shortcut is to assume that a long trill is just a short trill played longer. It is not. A four-note ornament and a sustained twenty-second trill use related but distinct techniques. The short trill is a fast burst, often with a slight accent on the first or last note, and ends quickly enough that fatigue is not a factor. The sustained trill requires endurance — the hand must remain loose across the whole duration, the wrist soft, the forearm uninvolved, and the trill must remain even from start to finish.

The most famous example is the Arietta from Beethoven's Op. 111, where an extended trill runs for many bars with melodic material happening above and below it. That trill is a different technical event from a four-note ornament in a Mozart sonata, and the practice work for each is different.

Short trills should be practised as short trills — four to eight notes, with a deliberate beginning and end, focusing on evenness and timing relative to the surrounding pulse. Long trills should be practised separately, starting at five or six seconds and gradually extending to the duration the music requires. Cheat 5 — Ignoring volume control

The fifth shortcut is the one almost no student notices until they record themselves. Trills are usually played at a constant volume — the same dynamic from start to finish, regardless of what the surrounding music is doing. Real musical trills are dynamically shaped. A trill that grows into a phrase peak should crescendo. A trill that lands a phrase should diminuendo. A trill inside a soft passage should stay soft. A trill that competes with melodic material above it should sit beneath that material, not punch through it.

The practice is to deliberately add dynamic variation to your trill exercises. Play a four-bar trill that grows from piano to forte across the four bars. Play one that diminishes. Play one that has a small swell in the middle. These will all feel awkward at first, because the default reflex is to maintain constant volume; the awkwardness is the indicator that you are training something new. Once dynamic control is real, your trills sound musical rather than mechanical, which is what separates trills that decorate a phrase from trills that disrupt one.

The four-week build curve

Most trill work that produces visible improvement runs across three to four weeks of distributed practice. The table below describes a baseline protocol that has worked for adult intermediate students who already have basic hand independence.

The distribution matters as much as the total time. Fifteen minutes a day for four weeks produces meaningful change. Ninety minutes once a week, especially on a tired evening, produces almost nothing and risks the kind of forearm tension that derails the whole project. Where to start the trill — upper or main note?

One historical question deserves a short answer because it confuses many students. Baroque practice generally starts trills on the upper auxiliary note (above the main note). Classical and Romantic practice usually starts on the main note itself. This is not a hard rule — composers varied, editions disagree, and modern performance practice has its own conventions — but as a default: Bach, Handel, and most Baroque ornaments start on the upper note. Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and most later composers start on the main note unless marked otherwise.

The reason this matters is that starting on the wrong note changes the harmonic and metric feel of the trill. A trill on a C that starts with D-C-D-C-D-C... has a fundamentally different musical effect from one that starts C-D-C-D-C-D... A pianist working on Bach should not import the Romantic convention by default. Editorial markings help when they exist; when they do not, consulting a current edition's preface or a teacher familiar with period practice is the responsible move.

Trill terminations — the part most students skip

The end of a trill is almost as important as its body. Most trills do not just stop; they end with a small figure — usually a turn back to the main note (main-below-main) or a stepwise resolution to the next melodic note. These terminations are often written out in the music, sometimes implied, and almost always musically necessary. A trill that simply stops sounds incomplete; a trill that resolves cleanly into the next note sounds finished.

The practice is to treat the termination as its own small unit, drilled in isolation. The four or five notes that exit the trill should feel like a deliberate musical event, not the consequence of the hand running out of energy. This is also why a long trill takes more practice than a short one — the longer the trill, the harder the termination is to control, because the hand has been doing the same motion for longer and the small motor adjustment back to a normal melodic figure is harder to execute cleanly.

Common mistakes worth naming explicitly

A few specific patterns are worth flagging because they are easy to fall into and not always obvious from the bench. The first is tensing the forearm to "get the trill going faster." This produces a fast but uncontrolled trill that cannot sustain and cannot terminate cleanly. The fix is to do less, not more — the trill should feel almost effortless, with the speed coming from finger independence rather than forearm contraction. The second is collapsing the wrist. The wrist must stay free and slightly mobile during the trill; a locked wrist defeats the rotational motion that fast even trills depend on. The third is practising only with one hand. Both hands need trill development. The non-dominant hand will lag behind, but it should not be skipped — many pieces require left-hand trills, and the left hand will not catch up without explicit work.

The fourth is to practise trills only inside the piece. Real trill development requires dedicated exercises outside any specific repertoire. Five minutes of isolated trill work a day, even just on C-D in the right hand at varying tempos, builds the fundamental skill that then transfers into any piece. Without this isolated work, every new piece's trills feel like starting from zero.

What changes when the work is right

Pianists who do the structured work for three to four weeks report a specific subjective change. Trills stop being something they "get through" and start being something they can do — evenly, at controlled tempos, with musical shape, for the duration the music requires. Recordings reveal the change immediately. Teachers comment on it without prompting. The piece that had a problematic trill stops having one.

The deeper change is that the trill stops being an obstacle and starts being an expressive choice. A pianist who can produce an even, controllable trill on demand can also choose to make it accelerate, to crescendo, to taper, to start softly and bloom — and those are the trills that make musical sense in performance. The mechanical version of "trill = fast notes" gets replaced by something the listener experiences as musical decision-making.

C.P.E. Bach was right. The trill is not decoration; it is a structural element of keyboard playing, and the way you practise it is one of the clearest indicators of how seriously you take the instrument. Twenty minutes a day for three weeks, distributed properly, produces trills that will serve every piece you play for the rest of your life. The "fast and long until it cramps" method, repeated over years, produces nothing but the same trill it produced on day one.
