Why Music Training Ignores the Body — and What Musicians Should Do Instead
Music training still teaches notes, sound, and interpretation more explicitly than posture, load, recovery, and body awareness. This piece explains the gap and outlines a better physical baseline for musicians.

Music training does not literally ignore the body. Teachers obviously see bodies. They talk about hand shape, breathing, setup, embouchure, shoulders, jaw, seat height, bow hold. But in a lot of training environments, the body still gets treated as a support issue rather than a core subject.
The main curriculum tends to stay musical in the narrow sense: notes, rhythm, phrasing, style, repertoire, interpretation, accuracy, auditions, excerpts, juries, performance. The body often enters only when something has already gone wrong. Pain. tension. fatigue. recurring collapse. a phrase that never settles. a hand that cannot last through the session. That is the mismatch.
Musicians are doing highly specialized physical work, often for hours, with asymmetric positions, repetitive motions, breath demands, and sustained attention. Yet many are still trained as if technical outcomes can be separated from the physical system producing them. They cannot.
This is not just a rhetorical complaint. The research base is clear enough now that the issue is hard to deny. In Health Education for Musicians, Matei and colleagues note that health education has long been recommended for core music curricula, while few such courses have been formally evaluated and institutions risk maintaining traditional practices rather than responding systematically to the evidence. In other words, the knowledge exists. It just is not always embedded where it needs to be.
The body is not separate from technique. It is where technique lives.
One reason this gap persists is that musicians are often taught to think of “technique” as the visible outcome rather than the underlying physical organization. A passage is clean. A shift lands. A phrase speaks. The sound opens. Those are outcomes. But every one of them is being produced by posture, balance, joint loading, muscle coordination, breath control, fatigue management, and sensory feedback.
That distinction matters because it changes what counts as a technical problem. If a player keeps tightening the shoulder to stabilize the bow, that is not a “body issue” sitting beside technique. It is a technique issue expressed through the body. If breath collapses before the phrase, that is not a wellness side note. It is part of how the phrase is built. If a pianist cannot maintain control late in a session because the forearms are cooked and attention is flat, that is not just a stamina story. It is practice design, physical load, and coordination all at once.
That is why the 2014 review Evidence-informed physical therapy management of performance-related musculoskeletal disorders in musicians is so useful. It explicitly notes that achieving optimal posture while performing can challenge basic concepts of “ideal” posture because most instruments require prolonged asymmetrical positions. That is exactly the practical reality musicians live inside. The goal is not some generic perfect posture. It is a position and movement strategy that loads the body more safely while preserving freedom and control.

Why training still under-teaches body awareness
Part of the answer is historical. Instrument design is old. Conservatory culture is old. The prestige layer of music training has often centered visible artistic outcomes more than sustainable physical process. The instrument is treated as part of culture and craft, but the body is treated as private maintenance.
Rosset, Baumann, and Altenmüller describe this clearly in their 2022 longitudinal study of music students. They note that students work close to their physical and mental limits, that instrument design often implies unfavorable ergonomics, and that preventive programs addressing bodily as well as psychological health are important from the beginning of study. Their data also found that first-year students already showed notable health concerns, with shoulders and back especially common pain regions, and that students who attended musicians’ health courses increased their knowledge and skills around these topics.
That is the broader point: body awareness is not a luxury add-on for injured musicians only. It is part of foundational literacy for people doing complex, repetitive, expressive physical work.

Many instruments ask for asymmetric or prolonged positions that are artistically normal but physically demanding.

If the sound is good today, training may ignore the physical cost until it becomes impossible to ignore.

What musicians actually need instead
A better model is not endless biomechanical micromanagement. Musicians do not need to become amateur clinicians. They do need a practical baseline: enough awareness to notice load, posture drift, tension buildup, breath disruption, and recovery needs before those things become bigger problems.
BAPAM's warm-up guidance is useful because it is simple and not mystical. Warm up before playing. Do not treat warm-up as stretching. Use posture checks, breathing, hydration, regular breaks, and stop if you feel pain or dizziness. That is the level of physical literacy many musicians still never get taught directly.
HSS makes the same idea practical from a different angle: warm up physically, take breaks, vary repertoire, gradually increase intensity, and use smart practice rather than cramming. Again, none of this is exotic. It is basic load management. The striking part is that so many musicians have to learn it from injury-prevention articles instead of inside the training itself.

The posture conversation needs to get smarter
One reason body teaching goes wrong is that it often collapses into cliché. “Sit up straight.” “Drop your shoulders.” “Relax.” Those instructions are not always useless, but they are usually too vague to solve the real problem.
The better posture question is not “what does ideal posture look like in a textbook?” It is “what organization lets this instrument and this phrase happen with less unnecessary effort?” The 2014 physical-therapy review is again helpful here. It explicitly says that performance posture has to allow freedom of movement, conserve energy, and support the task, while also recognizing that instrument playing often makes ideal symmetry impossible. That is a better frame. Posture is not cosmetics. It is an efficiency problem.
This is also where systems like Alexander Technique or Feldenkrais can be useful for some musicians, but they should be described honestly. The evidence is not “everyone should do this and everything will improve.” In the 2014 systematic review on Alexander Technique and musicians, effects on posture and music performance remained inconclusive, while anxiety outcomes looked more promising. That does not make body methods fake. It just means musicians should treat them as tools, not mythology.
Good body teaching is not about forcing musicians into one perfect shape. It is about helping them notice when the current setup is costing too much effort for too little control.
A practical baseline every musician can add now
Institutions may take years to improve. Individual musicians do not have to wait.
Before you play
Warm up gently, check posture, breathe, and ask whether the body feels available enough for the task.
During the session
Watch for rising effort, breath holding, jaw clenching, grip creep, or a position that never returns to neutral.
At the first warning sign
Change the task, reduce the load, take a break, or stop. Do not wait until the body gives you a dramatic reason.
Across the week
Stagger hard demands, increase hours gradually, and treat sleep, stress, and non-music physical load as part of the same system.
When in doubt
Get instrument-specific help early from a teacher or clinician who understands musicians, not just generic fitness advice.
After the session
Notice what body areas were doing the most work and whether the session made you more coordinated or just more tired.
